“You can catch me in the Cherry-red 150… Got the grizzy locked in the stizzy…
What you say your name was again, and I know you from where? I don’t know you MANNNN…All you Haters just walk on by!”

Hi-Yo,

What a rough week! From my blog crashing to crunched timelines and a million tasks to complete, I am beyond grateful that the weekend is here. I wanted to share what I wore to my company’s Award ceremony this year. My day had been crammed with meetings and I had to be able to quickly change and get going to avoid being late. I thought this little black number was perfect for the event, very PC in the front with a Ka-pow in the back. Many of you have asked and I thought I had it in my about me section; but if not, I work in Digital Advertising. The scope of my job is to help brands with their overall Digital strategy; whatever that may entail. It is a very fast paced, high demanding job/environment. However, on this particular day amongst others it was quite rewarding.

I’ll tell you a quick story. I graduated with a degree in Accounting and Journalism, and I just knew that my destiny was to become an attorney. It’s what everyone had urged me to do since I can remember and it had been what I was passionate about for some time. However; after college, I quickly realized that in this current economic climate the Law profession was one of diminishing returns. After-all, the market was over saturated with too few jobs, and a huge amount of debt to carry around after you’d successfully earned your degree. So I had to give some serious thought about what I wanted to do with my life. The great thing about a Finance or Accounting degree is that you can get a job anywhere. Why? Well every company, no matter the industry needs to be able to balance their books, and thus they need to hire individuals for that department.

Through a really good friend I was able to land my job in Accounting for my current company. I enjoyed it for some time because no two days were alike and anyone who works in Accounting/Finance can tell you that is very rare, usually you do the same thing over and over again. Nonetheless, I started to think about my life again which I seem to do more often than I probably should. I realized that what had appealed to me about being an attorney was in part, the Public Speaking aspect. Being able to represent someone who couldn’t adequately do so for themselves. Knowing that, I pondered on what could be a good role for me to use my analytical abilities but with a public speaking twist. I really hadn’t considered this for too long before I got an opportunity from my mentor who offered me a role that in hind sight, was the perfect role for me although I didn’t know it then. At the time, I was very hesitant because it’s funny what you think you can do, and how you work really hard for something and then that very thing is presented to you and you begin second guessing yourself. Thankfully, I had a great mentor and friends who could tell me that the trepidation I was feeling was a natural thing, it was merely “the fear of the unknown”.

Needless to say, I took the role and joined the team of my mentor and it has since been one of the best decisions of my life. Last year was a great year for me and I was able to win an award for Deal Of The Year at my company. More-so than the award, I was really proud of myself for the hard work that I put in and earning the respect of my peers and superiors.

Okay so… this story turned out longer than I intended, lol. Nonetheless, the most important factors I’d like you to take away; if any are:

Trust your gut, don’t be afraid to try something just because you’re scared. Do your best to overcome it and press on
Think about what you want out of life
Work hard at all times, trust me it pays off
Keep growing, never be complacent

After all, we only get one life to live and if you do it right, there is no need to do it again.

P.S. – I may still go for my Law Degree or find something else to challenge myself. For those actively seeking a Law degree, I don’t mean to discourage you. Press on, and when you graduate if there are no jobs available that you want, you WILL create your on. I have faith in you.

I hope you enjoy the pics. Next post we will be back to the regular scheduled program, no mini-essays 🙂

  4. Alicia,

Congrats on your award, as well as your story. Often times we see blogs with fashion/beauty and many of those women aren’t working professionals, and its very refreshing to see how you balance your beauty with work/professionalism. Keep going for your dreams!! Love the dress by the way.
